Student Profile: Phil Schuyler, PMP
My Name is Phil Schuyler, I am 33 years old, and I work as a Sr. Controls Engineer in the Augusta, Ga area at Starbucks Coffee Company (Manufacturing). Most of my job consists of developing software applications related to my industry and manufacturing business intelligence. I have recently began managing capital projects with my organization as well as my previous employer so I only had about four years of experience managing capital projects prior to sitting for the PMP® exam. I knew that the PMP® credential would allow me to be more competitive within my organization so I went for it! A quick online search revealed that the PM PrepCast seemed to be the most cost effective approach to a successful test and I happen to learn better with some type of video delivery whereas traditional classroom coursework didn’t fit within my schedule.

I am currently broadening my business acumen as a Business Development Principal with Jacobs, primarily working in the public and defense sectors. I have over 15 years of management and IT consulting experience working with Booz Allen Hamilton, Deloitte Consulting, and now Jacobs. Recently, I was the deputy program manager for a multi-million dollar software development project for a government customer. It was in this role that I pursued my MBA in Project Management and began the quest for PMP certification. I never saw myself becoming a PM, but as my responsibilities grew, I became acutely aware of the need for solid project management across the various projects I supported. This led me to pursue the PMP beginning last summer (July 2015), and achieving the certification in December 2015.

I live in Sacramento, California where I have spent all of my adult life. Currently, I work for the California Department of Technology, but I have been employed for approximately 25 years with the State of California. My biggest enjoyment is writing so I am always tasked with writing impact analyses, concept documents, project documents, and requirements. Once upon a time, I also worked in drinking water so I wrote permits, inspection reports, and issued citations. In my private life, I own a solar business where I have really been able to use my project management skills. During the course of my studies, I spoke to several others looking to take the PMP exam. My first recommendation was always that they purchase the PM PrepCast through OSP International, LLC., which also comes with the PM Exam Simulator (a 90-day subscription). Not only are the podcasts with Cornelius Fichtner amazingly helpful and engaging, but the price for the entire purchase is so economical!

I would recommend students first read the PMBOK and the PMP Exam Overview in order to prepare an effective study plan with focus on the process groups.
My next step would be to review the OSP International Study Plan. I subscribed to this material and found it quite helpful in preparing for my exam.

I’m a father of 3 teenagers and have been married 21 years. Why is that important? I could not have passed the PMP without the support of my family. In my work life, I’m a Business Operations Manager currently in an Account Management role for a major telecom managed service provider.
In the first week of exam preparation, I suggest focusing on developing a plan for how you want to execute your studies. I strongly recommend studying the PrepCast material (chapter by chapter) alongside the PMBOK guide and following it up with Rita Mulcahy’s study guide.

I am a Project Manager for a manufacturing company in the Aerospace industry and over 20 years of experience in consulting and manufacturing operations.
The best course of action that I can recommend for exam preparation, is to first read the PMI book this takes about 4 to 6 weeks. Next take a PMP prep class maybe one to two weeks after completing the book. The Prep class should be one that provides online questions and tutorials. Once you have worked through all questions and completely understand then sign up and utilize the PMP Exam Simulator! This tool was invaluable to me in my preparation and took my understanding of the material to the next level for PMI exam. The questions were aligned with the actual exam and in some cases added a higher degree of difficulty.

I'm a CVS Health Systems employee and ex-military. I have worked primarily on computer and avionics systems and projects related to these systems. I have taken many tests in my career thus far. I study hard, but I play hard too and it is important to enjoy your downtime.
I recommend PMP testers to study Network Diagramming and Formulas in their first week. Group and order the Formulas by topic (they will be easier to remember this way) and Saturate your mind with this information early and often. Know how to do Network Diagramming, know how to do forward pass, know how to do backward pass, and know how to calculate Critical Path. There are many excellent study resources/demos on this topic. Also; don't shy away from Formulas, embrace them.
