## CPM Calculations - Start with day 0 or day 1? 10 years 9 months ago #3349

Abhinav Gupta Topic Author Offline Fresh Boarder Posts: 7 Thank you received: 1 For the exam does it matter whether you start with day 0 or day 1 for your CPM calculations? The book I am referring uses day 0, while the prepcast uses day 1. While float and critical path will remain the same using both methods, the ES & EF dates might differ. I prefer using 0 as the first day as it is not only faster but also reduces the chance of mistakes! Your thoughts? Abhinav Gupta Topic Author Offline Fresh Boarder Posts: 7 Thank you received: 1 Hi Cornelius, I read this post in your voice Unfortunately, this does not answer my question regarding the ES & LS dates. Using either technique, it is clear that the float values will be the same. However, if you use the day 0 method, the ES & LS dates are different from the ES & LS dates obtained using the day 1 method. I have found that you have to add 1 to the ES & LS dates in the day 0 method, you get the same dates as those in the day 1 method. While PMI does not prefer any particular technique, what do you do if a question on the exam asks "What is the ES of activity D"? Clearly there would be two possible answers for this question. Elizabeth Hibbert Offline Fresh Boarder Posts: 2 Karma: 1 Thank you received: 2 Thanks all! Why have a question on the prep exam where the options are only 1 day apart if the PMP exam will not do that? Miguel Sifontes Offline Fresh Boarder Posts: 1 Thank you received: 0 I just bought the PMP Simulator and I found in PMP Exam 1 question 42, exactly this situation. My answer was 2, based on Zero criteria, but the Simulator´s answer is 3 based on 1 Criteria. So actually you can find this kind of questions on the real exam , can´t you? Am I mistaken about this statement?. For Float calculation you can get the same result using either method, but what about activity duration? Your e-mail address will never be displayed on the site. Gabriella Dellino, PMP Offline Gold Boarder Posts: 266 Karma: 24 Thank you received: 93 Hi Lata, depending on the method you use, the only difference you will get is in the start and end dates of activities, and the way you compute them (for both the forward and the backward pass), but the activity duration remains the same—regardless of the method you follow. For example, if activity starts on Day 1, you will compute EF = ES + duration - 1; if activity starts on Day 0, EF = ES + duration.
