Hi James, this is a good question to ask before committing to a certification.
Had you asked this question several years ago, I would have wholeheartedly agreed that a PMP is generic enough to be very helpful to all fields, including engineering, construction.
However, from what I hear from peers who have recently taken the PMP certification, over half of the syllabus is geared toward Agile PM, which while great, is not as valuable outside of Technology delivery.
If you are a professional in Civil Engineering/ Construction industry , and you wish to remain in this field, I would not recommend you invest your limited time and resources into a PMP without first exploring industry specific credentials first.
I am not an expert, but I would recommend you seek out information about how valuable and recognized certifications like Certified Construction Manager (CCM) or Certified Professional Constructor (CPC) are. If you find that those are held in high regard, then you may be better served to pursue those credentials.
