So I was looking at different qualifications and i was kinda confused, some places/websites say that I need to have experience. However, pmi.org says:
  • Before you apply, make sure you meet one of the following sets of PMP Certification requirements:
    Four-Year Degree
36 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years
35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® certification
High School Diploma or Associates Degree
60 months of experience leading projects within the past eight years
35 hours of project management education/training or CAPM® certification

I currently have a BA in Communications and a dual MBA in Human Resources Management and Strategic Management though I don't have any project management experience.

Seeing as I already have a four-year degree, am I safe to apply for this certification?

Also, is PMI legitimate? One job I was looking at said that they prefer PMP certification from PMI, so I just want to make sure before I spend the money. Thanks!

Hi Steven,
You do need project management experience, even if you have multiple degrees.

PMI requires both: a four-year degree (which you already have) AND 36 months of experience leading or directing project work within the last 8 years.
Your MBA is great, but unfortunately degrees cannot substitute for the required experience.

Good news is: PMI is flexible, and you don’t need a formal PM job title.
Experience counts if you were: planning work, coordinating tasks, managing timelines, etc.

If you truly have zero project experience, then you would not be eligible yet. In that case, you might consider CAPM certification (no experience required) or building some project involvement in your current role and applying later.

Elena.
