Are you asking for military specific advice? The Prepcast course offered by this website is typically more than enough to pass the PMP Exam.

You likely have the advantage of already being familiar with vague questions also, which make you pick the best answer when there are multiple correct answers. The military often uses similar exam formats.

I would suggest the Prepcast, and to study over at least 6 months, if possible. From my research, that is the cheapest option.

Your branch should also have some sort of program which pays for certification. PMP is included, but the Prepcast may not be. I used AF COOL to pay for my exam and paid for Prepcast out of pocket.

I'm going to break some bad news here: Having a PMP may help get your foot in the door, but it will not make "getting a job easier" in any market. It may set you somewhat apart from the next person but the PMP certification is not a golden ticket to a job. The real golden ticket to getting a job is networking - knowing someone who can get you in the door or help you get in the door.

I suspect that most, if not all, of the project management that you did in the military was done using traditional "Waterfall" project management. That type of project management is most common in government contracting and government work, but I've seen a trend recently (last 5 years or so) to move into hybrid project management techniques. I do government contracting and the projects that I lead typically use a hybrid methodology because it works best in the situations I'm presented.

The PMP exam is not a test of how well you can manage projects. It is a test of your knowledge of the principles of project management. The test has evolved in the last 5-6 years to incorporate "civilian" project management techniques such as Agile and Scrum. As you prepare, you will often hear some version of the phrase, "Do not answer the exam questions how YOU (personally) would do project management." In order to pass the exam, you need a good knowledge of project management principles as described in the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and its guide. For me, that was like learning a second language and I found the PMP exam to be, in many ways, more difficult than other professional certification exams.

I second Markus' recommendation of PrepCast products. They are very good and certainly helped me on my way to certification in 2019. I used a lot of other references as well to help because I was utterly unfamiliar with the PM "language" and needed more than the course was giving me. Note also that I'm pretty biased toward PrepCast products - they are good, but they are not the only references out there. Also, while Markus and I are both moderators on the forum, we are not financially compensated by PrepCast or OSP.

If you're looking for advice, mine is this: No education of any kind is ever wasted. The PMP certification is worthy of pursuit. For me it was as much professional as it was personal growth. Good luck.

Hi im a captain with 6 years of experience leading teams, managing projects, and many other stuff. Im transitioning out of the military and am pursuing my PMP so i can find work easier. I have quite a bit of experience managing projects within a military context but am admittedly not that knowledgeable with civilian project management. Currently enrolled in a program for veterans but to be honest, I tend to learn best with self-study.

Anyone have recommendations for prep books or videos, even other resources are appreciated? Apologies if this has been asked before, but wanted to give some context to my background, maybe someone with my experience can help.
