Hi Christopher, this is an interesting question. Tailoring speaks to one of the most practical aspects of adapting the theory and practices into real life projects. While I do not recall any specific exam questions on this, I can imagine there could be a fair number based on hypothetical scenarios.
Some examples I can contribute from experience are:
1. Tailoring of project communications plans based on the nature and complexity of the project 's impact. For instance, in a simple firm with only few business units or in a project with narrow scope (say only one function is affected) - the PM will adopt a simpler and more uniform communication method. This may have to be significantly modified if there are either multiple functions affected with individual communications going out to each, or a complex organization with interconnected groups.
2. Organizational maturity in the area relevant to the Project effort - will entail extensive hand-holding if the maturity is low, vs. more of a "guidance" approach to achieving management of the changes behaviors and processes.
3. Stakeholder assessment will also impact how you tailor the approach - you would adopt different methods to engage with hostile stakeholder with high power and influence vs. a stakeholder who is on the fence vs a stakeholder who is wholeheartedly behind your project.
