HI David,

I think the PMP gives a ton of tools that can be utilized in a leadership role to improve your capabilities, but i wouldn't say that is the primary focus of the certification. Thinks like effective problem resolution and communication are definitely things that will prove beneficial to any leader, as well as things such as risk management. But leadership, in its totality, is a very versatile study which incorporates a variety or practices and principles that can vary based on the industry and company culture.

I would say obtaining a PMP would not hurt your cause in any way shape or form, but secondary degrees like an MBA could give you a lot more focus on topics primarily related to leadership in a corporate capacity. Hope this helps and good luck on your journey.

Hi David,

While leadership itself can’t be taught from theory alone, going through the PMP really helped me frame my experience in a more strategic way. It gave me practical tools and a common language to lead more effectively, especially when working across roles or navigating tough decisions. I’d say it didn’t make me a leader, but it definitely sharpened my approach and helped others recognize me as one.

Wishing you the best on your path to Editor-in-Chief!

From a leadership perspective, the PMP provides a general overview and foundational knowledge of leadership principles and styles. Although there is no universal rule about which leadership style is better or worse, the certification helps you develop your own leadership skills and identify what works well for you—and what doesn’t.

So overall, it's a definite yes.

Hi everyone,

I’m aiming to move into an Editor-in-Chief position for the next year. My mentor suggested getting the certification to strengthen my case for the role.

For those in leadership, did the certification and experience give you that edge?
