Hi James,

You are definitely not alone in that feeling! A lot of candidates—especially those coming from dynamic, fast-paced industries like fintech—are breathing a huge sigh of relief about the recent exam shift.

Rushing to take the old exam often meant treating preparation like an exercise in rote memorization—cramming process groups, inputs, and outputs just to pass a test.

The new format launched earlier this month (July 9, 2026) is much closer to how modern projects are actually run. With the Business Environment domain jumping to 26% of the exam, the focus has shifted heavily toward strategic alignment, governance, risk, organizational change, and real-world value delivery. Instead of asking you to recall inputs and outputs, the test evaluates how you handle ambiguity, weigh trade-offs, and make decisions under pressure.

For professionals with a solid background like your 9 years in fintech, this is a huge advantage. You are already used to dealing with regulatory compliance, product adoption, and cross-functional decision-making daily—which is precisely the mindset PMI is now testing. If you are looking to align your preparation with this new style, The PM PrepCast training course and the PMP Exam Simulator Deluxe have already rolled out their Core Releases for the updated exam. They focus on building that deep, situational decision-making framework rather than relying on memorization.

Waiting was definitely the smart move for your background. Embrace the new format—it plays right to your real-world strengths!

Best of luck with your prep,

Work in fintech for about 9 years. Honestly, I was nervous about the July switch but now I'm kind of relieved I waited.

The old format felt like memorizing ITTOs and process groups. The new one seems more about principles and real-world application. That actually fits how I work better.

Anyone else in the same boat? Or do you wish you rushed to take the old version?
