Hi everyone,

I'm starting to look into applying for the PMP and I'm trying to understand exactly what's required for the application process, particularly when it comes to documenting and verifying work experience.

Most of my experience comes from smaller companies and startups, and I'm not sure whether that affects eligibility or how PMI evaluates project work completed in those environments.

For those who have gone through the application process recently:

What information do you need to provide about past projects and employers?
How does PMI verify your experience if you're selected for an audit?
Do projects completed at startups or small businesses count the same as those from larger organizations?
Is there anything I should request from former managers or employers ahead of time to make the process smoother?

I'm finding the PMP requirements a bit overwhelming and would appreciate any advice, resources, or guidance on where to start.

I don't have "recent" experience, but PMI takes a very, very broad view of the word "project." It does not matter where or for whom you did the project for: Start up or multi-billion dollar company, PMI is agnostic to that. I'm self employed and do projects for clients, so I listed those.

In your application, you need to quickly summarize the project and how you managed it, listing the actions taken in each of the project domains. Short bullet points are your friends here. The project does not need to be successful, but at least some of the listed projects need to have gone to completion to show you have experience in project closeout.

RE: Verification of experience (audit): I suspect that they ask you for more documentation which may include contacting your employer for verification/attestation of your project involvement. I would not bother current/former employees or companies unless PMI requests more information. You're just adding unnecessary stress and anxiety on yourself.

I would suggest going through the PM PrepCast course which does outline this and is a great guide.
I sat my PMP July of 2025 so almost a year ago, I wrote all my experience down in word and then just got AI to check it and help phrase it in PMI language, however I was very careful about how far it went as this could be sent to former employers etc so it has to remain close to the language that they can understand. The process is very smooth and PMP is not out to fail you on this, and I know it can be the stressful part, but it went through very easily for me.

If you get audited, they will request information from a named source which will need to verify you worked on the project. Be careful who you send this to as if someone disagrees with your involvement it could put a hold on your applications.

I had the exact same doubts when I started looking into this! From what I have reviewed so far, the application logistics can definitely feel overwhelming at first glance. I've been reading through the official PMI Certification Handbook to get some clarity on these exact requirements.

Here is what the official policy outlines for anyone going through the application process:

You must document certain educational and professional experience requirements in the online PMI application.

All applications are subject to an audit, although only a percentage of applications are selected for audit. If you're selected, you will be notified by email prior to payment of the certification fee. You are then allowed 90 days to submit the requested documentation.

PMI certifications are distinguished by their global development and application, which makes them transferable across industries and geographic borders. The handbook doesn't make a distinction between startups or large corporations; you are assessed using a combination of education and/or professional experience.

If you are audited, you will explicitly be asked to submit supporting documentation, such as signatures from your supervisor(s) or manager(s) from the professional experience(s) recorded in the experience verification section of the application. You will also need to provide copies of your diploma/degree and copies of certificates and/or letters from the training institute(s).

It is definitely a smart move to reach out to your former managers ahead of time to make sure you have their current contact information ready just in case.
