TOPIC: Should I start with CAPM or go for the PMP?

I’ve been working in Quality Assurance for just over two years and I’m currently exploring certification options.

The CAPM seems like a natural starting point, but I’m wondering if my QA background is already enough to pursue the PMP instead. I’ve been involved in test planning, coordinating with dev teams, and supporting project timelines. Is the CAPM a valuable stepping stone, or should I aim directly for the PMP?

The PMP exam has a lot more requirements to qualify. In particular you are required to have specific project management experience.

I think Cornelius hit it on the head!

Though the PMP has more requirements to qualify, both can be beneficial in jump starting your career path in Project Management. I personally went directly the PMP route as I had all the pre-requisite requirements completed after my job sponsored my 30-hours of in class time (additional requirement).

if you do find yourself missing some requirements as it relates to the PMP, there could be some benefit in obtaining your CAPM in the interim until you qualify to pursue your PMP. But, from your description, it doesn’t sound like you would have an issue identifying real life project management hours. You may only have a few other requirements to take the test.
